AutoCAD Fonts, Linetypes and Dynamic Blocks: A Complete Guide

John Abodunwa

October 2, 2026

Introduction

When working on an AutoCAD drawing, geometry is only part of the story. The way that drawing looks and communicates information is equally important. Text needs to be readable, different types of lines need to communicate different features, and frequently used objects should be easy to modify without having to redraw them from scratch.

This is where AutoCAD fonts, linetypes and dynamic blocks become particularly useful.

Fonts determine how text and annotations appear in a drawing. Linetypes allow you to distinguish between different types of features using continuous, dashed, dotted or customized patterns. Dynamic blocks, meanwhile, allow a single block to change its size, shape or configuration according to predefined rules.

Therefore, understanding these three features can significantly improve both the appearance and efficiency of your AutoCAD workflow.

Whether you are an architect, surveyor, civil engineer, designer or beginner learning AutoCAD, this guide explains what these features are, how they work and how you can use them in practical projects

Understanding AutoCAD Fonts

An AutoCAD font controls the appearance of text used in a drawing. Just like fonts in word-processing software, different AutoCAD fonts can give text different shapes and styles.

However, AutoCAD works with specific font formats. Two of the most common are TrueType Fonts (TTF) and Shape Fonts (SHX).

TrueType Fonts (TTF)

TrueType fonts are commonly used across Windows applications and can also be used in AutoCAD. They are recognizable by the .ttf file extension.

Because they are system fonts, installing a TTF font generally makes it available to AutoCAD as well.

SHX Fonts

SHX fonts are commonly associated with AutoCAD and are stored using the .shx file extension. They are particularly common in technical drawings because of their simple, vector-based structure.

For example, a drawing created using a particular SHX font may display incorrectly on another computer if that font is not available there.

Therefore, when sharing AutoCAD drawings, it is important to consider the fonts used in the drawing, especially custom SHX fonts.

How to Add a Font to AutoCAD

If you have downloaded a font and want to use it in an AutoCAD drawing, the installation method depends on the type of font.

For TTF fonts, install the font through your operating system. On Windows, you can right-click the font file and choose the installation option.

For SHX fonts, the process is slightly different. The SHX file can be placed in AutoCAD’s Fonts folder, or you can store it in another folder and add that folder to AutoCAD’s Support File Search Path.

This means that when someone asks how to add a font in AutoCAD, the first thing to determine is whether the font is a TTF or SHX file.

Basic process for adding an SHX font

  1. Obtain the .shx font file.
  2. Copy the file to your preferred font folder.
  3. Add the folder to AutoCAD’s Support File Search Path if necessary.
  4. Restart AutoCAD if the font does not immediately appear.
  5. Open the Text Style Manager using the STYLE command.
  6. Select the newly available font when creating or modifying a text style.

This approach is particularly useful when working with custom fonts stored on a company server or shared project folder.

Understanding Linetypes in AutoCAD

Linetypes control the visual pattern of lines in an AutoCAD drawing.

A continuous line, for example, can represent a visible edge, while a dashed line may represent a hidden feature. Similarly, centerlines often use a combination of long and short dashes.

Common AutoCAD linetypes include:

  • Continuous
  • Dashed
  • Dotted
  • Center
  • Hidden
  • Phantom
  • Border

Linetypes are particularly important in technical drawings because they allow users to communicate information without adding excessive text.

Furthermore, AutoCAD allows users to create custom linetypes when the standard options are not sufficient.

For example, a utility drawing may require a line containing text such as “WATER”, while a specialized engineering drawing might require a line containing a particular symbol.

How to Make Linetype in AutoCAD

If the standard linetypes supplied with AutoCAD do not meet your requirements, you can create a custom one.

There are two common approaches.

Method 1: Create a Simple Linetype

Simple custom linetypes can be created by editing a .lin file using a text editor.

A LIN file contains the definition of the linetype. The definition controls the sequence of dashes, spaces and dots.

For example, a basic custom pattern can be constructed using positive values for dashes, negative values for spaces and zero for dots.

After creating the definition, the LIN file can be loaded into AutoCAD using the LINETYPE command.

Method 2: Use AutoCAD Express Tools

Another option is to use the MKLTYPE command available through AutoCAD Express Tools.

This method can be useful when creating a custom linetype from geometry already drawn in your drawing.

For example, you could draw a repeating pattern and use it as the basis for a custom linetype.

This approach is particularly convenient when the desired linetype contains more than a basic dash-and-space pattern.

What Are Dynamic Blocks in AutoCAD?

A block is a collection of objects combined into a single reusable object.

For example, instead of drawing a door repeatedly in an architectural drawing, you can create a door block and insert it wherever it is needed.

A dynamic block takes this concept further.

Rather than creating several separate blocks for different variations of the same object, you can create one block with predefined behaviors.

For example, a single dynamic door block could be designed to change width.

Similarly, a dynamic window block could have different configurations, while a furniture block could be flipped or adjusted using grips.

As a result, dynamic blocks can reduce repetitive drafting and make drawings easier to edit.

How to Create Dynamic Block in AutoCAD

A typical workflow is:

1. Draw the object

First, create the geometry that will become the block.

For example, draw a simple door using lines and arcs.

2. Create the block

Use the BLOCK command to convert the geometry into a block.

Give the block a meaningful name and define its insertion point.

3. Open the Block Editor

Open the block in the Block Editor using the BEDIT command.

The Block Editor provides the environment for adding parameters and actions to the block.

4. Add a parameter

A parameter determines what aspect of the block can change.

For example, a linear parameter can control the width of a door.

5. Add an action

An action determines what happens when the parameter changes.

For example, a stretch action can make the door wider when the user moves its grip.

6. Test the block

Before finishing, test the dynamic block to make sure its behavior works as intended.

For example, if the block is designed to stretch from 800 mm to 1,200 mm, verify that the appropriate geometry changes while the parts that should remain fixed stay in position.

7. Save the block

Once the behavior works correctly, save and close the Block Editor.

The resulting block can then be inserted and modified within your drawing.

Practical Tips for Using Fonts, Linetypes and Dynamic Blocks

Keep your fonts organized

Avoid scattering custom SHX fonts across random folders. Instead, maintain a consistent location for project or company fonts.

Use meaningful linetypes

Do not create complicated linetypes simply because AutoCAD allows you to. Every linetype should communicate useful information.

Watch your linetype scale

Sometimes a linetype is loaded correctly but appears as a continuous line. In such cases, the problem may be the linetype scale rather than the linetype itself.

Commands such as LTSCALE can help control how linetype patterns appear.

Build reusable dynamic blocks

Think about objects you repeatedly draw in your projects. Doors, windows, furniture, electrical symbols and other standard components can often benefit from dynamic blocks.

Test before using blocks extensively

A dynamic block that behaves incorrectly can create more problems than it solves. Therefore, test its grips, parameters, actions and visibility states before using it throughout a major project.

Common Problems and How to Avoid Them

Font does not appear

If a font is missing, check whether the correct TTF or SHX file has been installed or whether its folder is included in AutoCAD’s support paths.

Custom linetype does not load

Check the LIN file for formatting errors and make sure any required SHX or shape files are available.

Linetype appears continuous

Check the linetype scale. A pattern may be too large or too small relative to the drawing.

Dynamic block does not behave correctly

Review the parameter and action relationships in the Block Editor. Make sure the correct objects have been selected for the associated action.

Drawing looks different on another computer

This can happen when the recipient does not have the same fonts, custom linetypes or supporting files. Therefore, project files should be packaged carefully when being transferred.

Conclusion

AutoCAD fonts, linetypes and dynamic blocks may appear to be separate features, but together they contribute significantly to the quality and efficiency of a technical drawing.

Fonts improve the presentation and readability of annotations. Linetypes provide a visual language for representing different features and conditions. Meanwhile, dynamic blocks make frequently used objects more flexible and reusable.

More importantly, mastering these tools moves you beyond simply drawing objects in AutoCAD. You begin to create drawings that are organized, standardized and easier to modify.

Whether you are learning how to add fonts in AutoCAD, creating a custom linetype, or learning how to create dynamic blocks in AutoCAD, regular practice is the key to becoming comfortable with these features.

At Geoinfoacademy, learners can develop practical AutoCAD skills through structured training, hands-on exercises and industry-focused projects designed to connect software knowledge with real-world applications.
