Nigeria is increasingly turning to technology to improve security, monitor infrastructure, and respond to threats across difficult and expansive environments. Among these technologies,
drone surveillance in Nigeria is becoming an important tool for collecting aerial intelligence.

Unlike fixed cameras and conventional ground patrols, drones can move across large areas and provide a different perspective from above. Depending on the equipment and operation, they can capture high-resolution imagery, live video, thermal information, and other data.

As a result, organisations can use UAVs for security monitoring, infrastructure inspection, environmental observation, reconnaissance, and rapid situational awareness.

What Is Drone Surveillance?

Drone surveillance involves using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with cameras or other sensors to observe and collect information about an area.

A drone can provide aerial footage while an operator controls the aircraft from the ground. More advanced systems can combine aerial video, GPS information, thermal sensors, mapping technology, and analytics.

What Makes Drone Surveillance Effective?

The drone itself is only one part of an effective surveillance system.

Drone operations in Nigeria are regulated. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) currently oversees the certification, registration, operation, and surveillance of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems under Part 21 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations.

The NCAA launched a digital UAS/RPAS registration portal in May 2026 to streamline drone registration and regulatory processes. The portal provides registration and approval pathways for different categories of UAV operations.

For commercial operations, additional requirements can apply. NCAA guidance also addresses security screening, operational approvals, and other regulatory requirements.

Importantly, operators should not assume that a drone can simply be flown anywhere. Airspace restrictions, safety requirements, privacy considerations, and permissions from relevant authorities can apply depending on the operation and location.
