Remote sensing involves collecting information about places or objects on the earth’s surface from a distance.
Remote sensing analysts work with data measured from satellite or aircraft to infer what it means about the world, presenting maps and other information to display the results. The role may also involve some fieldwork to corroborate the findings by taking field measurements.
Some of the duties of a remote sensing analyst include:
- Analyzing data acquired from aircraft, satellites or ground-based platforms
- Using statistical analysis software, image analysis software or Geographic Information Systems
- Collecting and formatting image data.
- Maintaining knowledge of developments in the field through literature and attending conferences.
- Participating in fieldwork and designing methods of collection or analysis of data.
- Processing images to create land cover maps and interpreting images and maps.
- Collecting supporting data to corroborate remote sensing data analyses, such as field survey data
- Preparing and deliver reports plus monitoring the quality of information.
- Design or implement strategies for collection, analysis, or display of geographic data.
- Manage or analyze data obtained from remote sensing systems to attain meaningful results.
- Prepare or deliver reports or presentations of geospatial project information.
- Conduct research into the application or enhancement of remote sensing technology.
- Discuss project goals, equipment requirements, or methodologies with colleagues or team members.
- Integrate other geospatial data sources into projects.
- Organize and maintain geospatial data and associated documentation.
- Process aerial or satellite imagery to create products such as land cover maps.
Remote Sensing Analyst should have a bachelor’s degree in surveying, geography, urban planning or have a degree in environmental sciences program.
