PRECISION TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY AND MAPPING: HOW GEOINFOTECH SUPPORTED MINING SITE PLANNING IN JOS THROUGH DRONE TECHNOLOGY
Geoinfotech conducted a high-precision Topographic Survey and Mapping project at Gyel Village, Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, to support mining site planning and operational development. The project, executed in March 2026, involved UAV aerial surveying, GNSS data acquisition, terrain analysis, and the generation of accurate geospatial datasets for effective land management and engineering planning.
The survey commenced with a reconnaissance assessment and project planning exercise to establish survey controls and define the operational workflow. Using RTK-enabled drones and Hi-Target GNSS receivers, high-resolution aerial imagery and precise coordinate data were acquired across the surveyed mining environment to ensure accurate terrain representation and spatial analysis.
The acquired datasets were processed using advanced photogrammetric and GIS software to generate orthophotos, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), contour maps, slope analysis maps, drainage models, and flow accumulation datasets. These outputs provided detailed insights into terrain conditions, elevation variability, drainage behaviour, and landform characteristics required for mining and infrastructure planning.
Field activities included drone deployment, GNSS control establishment, aerial data capture, and site validation, while office-based operations focused on data processing, terrain interpretation, cartographic production, hydrological analysis, and quality control. Deliverables included orthophotos, contour datasets, digital elevation models, drainage maps, and comprehensive technical reports for operational decision-making and project development.
By integrating drone surveying and modern geospatial methodologies, the project significantly improved the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of topographic mapping compared to traditional surveying techniques, reducing operational risks and supporting informed engineering and land-use decisions.
This project has enabled stakeholders to better understand the topographic and environmental characteristics of the Gyel mining environment, supporting improved resource planning, drainage assessment, and infrastructure development. Geoinfotech continues to provide innovative geospatial solutions that improve operational efficiency, environmental management, and data-driven decision-making across mining and infrastructure projects.
For future assessments, periodic drone-based topographic monitoring and terrain analysis are recommended to maintain updated spatial information, support operational planning, and improve environmental sustainability throughout mining activities.
