The best way to attain a career in GIS is through an internship. Internships are mostly low-paying, part-time jobs but they are the best way to get further GIS training and to develop your GIS skills in a real-world setting.
Companies hire GIS analysts to create spatial data sets, prepare maps and maintain databases. But GIS analysts also often prepare reports, perform research and give a professional opinion. As a GIS analyst, one is needed in almost every discipline for spatial data management.
Getting Experience in GIS
For the GIS Technician, GIS is the job.GIS Analyst is higher than the GIS Technician and probably having some specialist knowledge of spatial analysis may be in a particular field (e.g. oil sector, renewable energy, civil engineering etc).
As with all fields, nothing beats real-world experience.1-2 years of hands-on experience with GIS-based software.
If you first took an internship, you should be able to aim the job title Technician or Specialist which tends to be used interchangeably.
