Aerial Imagery Helping Recovery From Hurricane IAN
Since the 28th of September, news channels have been riveted with reports of a Hurricane named Ian which swept over 3 countries from Puerto Rico to the coast of Cuba and washed over the beaches and counties of Florida leaving indescribable chaos and carnage in its wake.
The Hurricane which ranged from a category 1-4 has left up to 69 people dead, and thousands displaced. Many homes have been swept away and although massive clean-up efforts are ongoing, the impact of the Hurricane still leaves many unaccounted for and billions in properties damaged.
More than 83,000 buildings were affected by flooding in the western coastline of Florida, and many had no option but to be evacuated from their homes through airlifting, swimming, and other means.
Sadly, this is one of nature’s inexplicable ways we may not know the reasons or why it was so devastating.
Fugro, a Multinational company specializing in collecting and analyzing geological data on land and at sea, has partnered with McKenzie Intelligence Services to provide a rapid response mapping project in southwest Florida. The project is based on the acquisition of high-resolution aerial imagery over two of the state’s hardest-hit communities where assistance is most needed.
Within days of Hurricane Ian making landfall, Fugro and MIS had mobilized to acquire aerial imagery which would help to properly assess the damage done and enhance analysis to produce accurate and timely assessments of the severity and cause of damage. This would also allow insurance companies to help their customers financially recover from this catastrophic event as quickly as possible.
The commercial director of Remote Sensing and mapping for Fugro in the Americas stated that the project would contribute to timely and accurate post-storm analysis that will make a meaningful difference in the communities affected by the raging storms.
