Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) collaborated with the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) to track properties which should be properly taxed, according to Alhaji Attah Abdullahi, Director of FIRS. In conversation with media during a workshop in Abuja, Abdullahi informed that the country is now set to evolve a new tax system, which will compel every Nigerian in the working group to pay tax, even as the new tax system has been designed to expose public officers who steal public funds

The new tax system will have links with every bank in Nigeria through a comprehensive computerization process, making it possible for every account operated by either the government or private individuals to be monitored in the tax offices across the federation while information on lodgments would be available to the tax officers at the touch of a button.

The FIRS official said every registered business would henceforth be taxed, including transactions by importers, while Nigerians who had been evading taxes would now be compelled through the new system to pay.

Abdullahi said that the FIRS had recruited experts to operate the new tax system. The newly recruited officials belong to the banking sector, GSM experts, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ICPC, Code of Conduct, the State Security Service (SSS) and different ministries.

He said every taxpayer would have a tax identification code, which would make tax evaders to be easily detected and the FIRS would create data on taxpayers both at the state and federal levels with the new tax system.

He disclosed also that while arrangements were on to roll out the new system, the proper operation would begin to take effect in the next two years.

He disclosed that the FIRS would be at liberty to implement the new tax system, having achieved financial autonomy, adding that the tax agency in Nigeria would be going into partnership with the EFCC, the ICPC and other anti-corruption agencies to this effect

Steps to avoid Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

Many people who get infected suffer mild illness and recover, but it can be harder for some. Take care of your wellbeing and protect others by:

〈1〉

Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with alcohol-based rubbing or washing your hands with soap and water, destroys viruses on your skin.

〈2〉

Maintain social distance at least 1 meter (3 feet) between you and someone coughing or sneezing. When anyone coughs or sneezes, they stream from their nose or mouth tiny liquid droplets that may contain the virus. When you’re too close, you can breathe in droplets, like the COVID-19 virus, if you have the disease.

〈3〉

Avoid touching the sensitive inner parts of your body eg (eyes, nose and mouth). Hands touch several objects and catch viruses. When infected, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, or mouth. The virus will invade your body and make you sick.

〈4〉

Practice respiratory hygiene Make sure that you and your people follow proper respiratory hygiene. This means covering the mouth and nose with bent elbow or tissue while coughing or sneezing. Replace the used tissue immediately.

Virus distributing droplets. Through practicing good respiratory hygiene, you protect people around you from viruses like cold, flu, and COVID-19.

〈5〉

Seek medical care early – Just in case If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing

When you have fever, cough and trouble breathing, stay home early when you feel unwell. When you have fatigue, cough, and breathing trouble, seek medical attention and call ahead. Follow the local health authority’s guidance.

If you are in Nigeria Immediately call NCDC’s 24/7 toll-free number 0800 970 000 0010. Do not self-medicate
