Different jobs in GIS

Careers in GIS are in demand more than ever. Many different industries use geographic information systems (GIS), which makes it available in numerous fields. GIS professionals qualify for occupations in countless fields are:

CAD Drafter

This field uses computer-aided design software to create designs and schematics used to manufacture products or construct buildings. These professionals may specialize in many areas including civil, mechanical, and electrical drafting.

GIS Technician

GIS technicians make maps and customized geographic information systems (GIS) applications and manipulate data to serve a variety of purposes. They read and interpret maps, manipulate and understand digital land data, and manage data entered into a GIS database.

Survey CAD Technician

Surveying and mapping technicians assist photogrammetrists, surveyors, and cartographers by collecting data and making maps for engineering, construction, visit assigned locations to take measurements of the land while a mapping technician uses geographic information to produce maps and blueprints.

Cartographic Technician

The work performed by cartographic technicians ensures that maps, diagrams, and data are of high quality and value to studies, land surveys, or development planning, preparing cartographic products, including digital maps and geospatial data.

Land Survey Technician

These technicians use surveying instruments, mark boundaries on property and stake constructions, outdoors collecting land information that is used in cartography, construction or engineering.

GIS Analyst

Their primary duties include analyzing spatial data through mapping software and designing digital maps with geographic data and various other data sets.

Geodesist

Geodesists measure and monitor the Earth’s size and shape, geodynamic phenomena (e.g., tides and polar motion), and gravity field to determine the exact coordinates of any point on Earth and how that point will move over time.

Geographer

They also examine political or cultural structures and study the physical and human geographic characteristics of regions ranging in scale from local to global. Geographers use maps and global positioning systems in their work

LiDAR Analyst

The LiDAR((Light Detection and Ranging) Analyst is responsible for the analysis of remotely sensed data.

Cartographer

Cartographer is involved with the scientific, technological and artistic aspects of developing and producing maps. Cartographers use geodetic surveys and remote sensing systems to measure, analyze, and create maps and charts for political, cultural, and educational purposes.

Remote Sensing Analyst

Remote sensing specialists interpret and analyze many types of aerial photographs and satellite images.

Geographic Information Systems Specialist

GIS specialists build and maintain GIS databases, and use GIS software to analyze the spatial and non-spatial information in them. They may work under a wide variety of job titles, including GIS Analyst, GIS Technician, and Cartographer.

GIS Administrator

The GIS Administrator role includes the development and design of database strategies, monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, and planning for future expansion requirements.

GIS Developer

GIS Specialist works as a software developer to help design and develop GIS programming applications and tools. They also work to maintain GIS software programs in accordance with the needs of the organizations and/or clients.

GIS Coordinator

GIS Coordinator captures, stores, manipulates, analyzes, and manages spatial and geographic data.GIS Coordinator role is responsible for providing technical expertise and supervision of day-to-day implementation and operation of a team of staff including programmers, cartographers, data managers, and support specialists.

Survey Manager

Surveyors make precise measurements to determine property boundaries. They provide data relevant to the shape and contour of the Earth’s surface for engineering, mapmaking, and construction projects.

GIS Project Manager

GIS project managers are the people who lead a team in analyzing geographic data for a specific purpose, such as city planning or disaster relief. Supervise project team in application design, development, testing and deployment.

Geomatics Software Engineer.

Geomatics engineers design, develop, and operate systems for collecting and analyzing spatial information about the land, the oceans, natural resources, and manmade features.

Your specific duties in this career vary by field, but many of the responsibilities are similar, equipped with data visualization and spatial analysis skills.
